Course Description
English 1A is the first course in 无忧短视频抯 two-semester lower-division composition sequence; it provides an introduction to baccalaureate-level composition, with attention to the 損ersonal voice and personal experience, on the one hand, and the more formal attitudes and demands of writing at the university (expository and argumentative essays), on the other. Students will develop college-level reading abilities, rhetorical sophistication, and writing styles that give form and coherence to complex ideas and feelings.
Prerequisites: Placement by the English Proficiency Test (EPT), or passage of an approved substitute course for the EPT.
Course Goals and Student Learning Objectives
Students shall achieve the ability to write complete essays that demonstrate college-level proficiency in all of the following:
Clear and effective communication of meaning.
An identifiable focus, tailored to a particular audience and purpose (argumentative essays will state their thesis clearly and show an awareness, implied or stated, of some opposing point of view).
The ability to perform effectively the essential steps of the writing process (prewriting, organizing, composing, revising, and editing).
The ability to explain, analyze, develop, and criticize ideas effectively.
Effective use within their own essays of supporting material drawn from reading or other sources.
Effective organization within the paragraph and the essay.
Accuracy, variety, and clarity of sentences.
Appropriate diction.
Control of conventional mechanics (e.g., punctuation, spelling, reference, agreement).
Student Learning Objectives:
SLO 1: Students shall write complete essays that demonstrate the ability to perform effectively the essential steps in the writing process (prewriting, organizing, composing, revising, and editing).
SLO 2: Students shall write complete essays that demonstrate the ability to express (explain, analyze, develop, and criticize) ideas effectively.
SLO 3: Students shall write complete essays that demonstrate the ability to use correct grammar (syntax, mechanics, and citation of sources) at a college level of sophistication.
SLO 4: Students shall write complete essays that demonstrate the ability to write for different audiences.

Participation
This is not a class full of lectures and note-taking. While I will occasionally provide a handout or instructions, the majority of learning will take place through writing, reading, and discussing with others. Therefore, consistent attendance is extremely important in this course. If you miss a class, you will likely miss important instructions vital to the course. Missing two or more classes may be grounds for me dropping you from the course. (Keep in mind that I am not required to drop you from the course if you stop attending; the ultimate responsibility lies with you. If you do not officially drop a course, you may accidentally end up on the final roster and I will be forced to give you an F.)
Additionally, I expect respect and courtesy in the classroom. If you must arrive late, please do so quietly and without calling attention to yourself. Do not interrupt the class to ask what you have missed. Any behavior that distracts the learning environment will not be tolerated. You will be asked to leave the class if you engage in distracting behavior such as using your cell phone, sleeping, reading material not related to class, using the Internet to check Facebook, etc.
Our class will become our own reading and writing community; it will become a place where we all feel comfortable taking risks, sharing ideas, and finding our own distinct voices as observers and writers. Thus, every student抯 participation is essential to successful class discussions and writing activities. We will be posting both individual and group activities that will require 100% participation. If you have not posted by the specified deadline, you cannot earn credit on the activity assigned. No exceptions. Participation will account for 10% of your final grade.
Reading Responses
Regular reading responses will be required for this class. The purpose of these reading responses is to demonstrate your ability to carefully and critically read the materials of this class. Failure to turn in a reading response by the specified deadline will earn a zero (0). More directions for the reading responses will follow.
Quizzes
Quizzes may also be given for any of the readings. You will know about the quizzes in advance, and they will be open book. Quizzes are graded on a straight percentage and will count towards your reading response grade. You will earn a zero (0) if you fail to complete your quiz by the deadline.
Freewrites
You will write regular freewrites for this course, which will be collected immediately. More directions for freewrites will follow. Failure to turn in a Freewrite by collection time will result in an automatic zero (0).
In other words, no informal assignments (readings responses, quizzes or freewrites) will be accepted late for any reason.
Peer Workshops
Peer workshops are opportunities to receive feedback from your peers to revise your essays. Constructive feedback will help you to see where writing has effectively engaged its audience and where it can by revised to become even more powerful. In addition, learning to critique the essays of your peers is one of the best ways to learn to revise your own drafts. Participation in these workshops is mandatory. Participation is graded on a point scale of 0-5 and further details will be provided. If you have not submitted a complete draft of your essay to be workshopped by the specified deadline, then your final essay grade will also be lowered by 10%. Participation is worth 10% of your final grade.
Formal Assignments & Paper Policies
All formal writing assignments are due at the time designated. Any assignments turned in after the deadline will earn a 10% grade reduction for every class day late until it has been received. You may always turn in an assignment early. However, if it is more than one class day early, I recommend talking with me first.
In order to pass this course, all formal assignments must be completed. Failure to turn in a major assignment will result in an automatic F for the course.
Despite our advancing technology in this modern age, computers crash and the internet connection goes down. Save yourself from a potential catastrophe by frequently saving your drafts on multiple mediums. DO NOT save over your files, but rather save each new draft with a different draft number and new date and/or time. I recommend using separate file folders for each essay. Make sure to give yourself buffer time in case of emergency.
Final Portfolio Assignment
In this class, we will stress writing as a process that improves with time, effort, and substantial revision. During this course, you will create a portfolio of your work, including a written reflection of 1,000 words, which is worth 10% of your grade. Think of it as a scientific study of your progress as a writer over the next four months. What you include in your portfolio doesn抰 have to be perfect. Remember, writing is a process. Collecting your work and then reflecting on that work is part of the process. The portfolio project is designed to get you thinking about your specific challenges, your strategies for improvement, your successes and failures, and your goals for the future. Every writer, no matter how accomplished, has room for improvement. This portfolio is your culminating experience. This course does not have a final exam. More instructions for the portfolio will follow.Course Calendar
All major assignments will be listed in the course calendar. I reserve the right to make adjustments to the calendar as I deem necessary, but I will give you at least one week抯 notice in advance.
E-mail Etiquette
I am happy to discuss questions with you during class or in office hours. I encourage you to e-mail me if you have any difficulties or if an emergency arises. Please note that I will check my email only once per day, Monday-Friday. We all have other commitments in our lives; please e-mail me as early as possible to ensure a timely response.
Assignments and Grading Policy
Grading A-F. This class must be passed with a C (at least 70%) or better to move on to CORE GE Area C3 and to satisfy the prerequisite for English 1B. A passing grade in the course signifies that the student is a capable college-level writer and reader of English.
Grading Breakdown
Participation & Informal Writing (30% of total grade)
Freewrites, Reading Responses & Quizzes 20%
Participation (including Peer Workshops & discussions) 10%
